Our Feelings Change. God’s Promises Don't.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” - Proverbs 3:5
Have you ever wondered why your emotions and your faith don’t always seem to match?
There are days when you feel close to God and days when He seems far away. It’s tempting to believe our feelings tell us the whole story—but they don’t.
Our feelings do matter, but they do not define our standing before God.
Emotions can be helpful indicators of what’s happening in our hearts, but they are not the measure of God’s love or presence. Feeling anxious doesn’t necessarily mean God is distant.
Sometimes God uses those uneasy feelings, together with His Word, to draw us closer to Himself.
On the other hand, feeling comfortable or happy isn’t always a sign that all is well spiritually. We can become comfortable in patterns of sin, mistaking temporary ease for true peace while drifting from the life God desires for us.
A Christian’s confidence isn’t rooted in how we feel but in God’s promises. Our assurance rests in Christ, who has made us His own in Baptism, forgives us through His Word, and continually calls us back to Himself.
So, pay attention to your emotions—they may be pointing to something worth bringing before the Lord in prayer. But don’t let your feelings have the final word. Let God’s Word shape your perspective, remind you of His promises, and gently lead you back to the lasting peace that is found in Jesus.
Instead, let God’s Word have the final say. True peace is found not in changing emotions, but in the unchanging grace of Jesus Christ.
Our emotions change, but God’s promises do not. Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, your standing before God rests on His finished work, not on your changing feelings.
